can you absorb carnosine through skin

Skip the gut. Go through the skin.

Can you absorb carnosine through skin? Yes: in racehorses, topical carnosine raised muscle carnosine ~35% in 30 minutes. Why LactiGo skips the pill.

Short answer

Yes, you can absorb carnosine through skin. In a 2021 crossover study in racehorses, carnosine applied topically raised muscle carnosine about 35% above placebo at 30 minutes and 46% at 60. Swallowed carnosine is mostly broken down in the blood first. LactiGo uses the skin route, and in a triple-blind trial it lifted peak power 5–10%.

Yes — carnosine applied to the skin has been measured arriving in muscle. In a 2021 placebo-controlled crossover study, ten racehorses had carnosine applied topically and muscle samples taken afterwards: muscle carnosine was about 35% higher than placebo at 30 minutes and about 46% higher at 60 minutes. That matters because the obvious route, swallowing it, has a problem: an enzyme in the blood, serum carnosinase, breaks carnosine down fast. When 25 people took a large oral dose in one study, only 8 showed any measurable rise in blood carnosine. The standard workaround, beta-alanine, takes 4–6 g a day for weeks. LactiGo takes the third route — through the skin over the working muscle, 45 minutes before training — and in a 2025 triple-blind trial on world-class athletes it lifted peak power 5–10% against a menthol-matched placebo.

Do carnosine supplements work?

Swallowed carnosine mostly does not survive the trip. Your blood carries a very active enzyme, serum carnosinase, that splits carnosine into its two building blocks, beta-alanine and histidine. So a carnosine capsule is largely a roundabout way of taking a small dose of beta-alanine.

The clearest human data comes from Everaert et al. 2012. Twenty-five healthy people took a single large oral dose — 60 mg of carnosine per kilogram of body weight, over 4 g for a 70 kg adult. Only 8 of the 25 showed any measurable rise in blood carnosine in the hour afterwards. The other 17 had about twice as much carnosinase protein in their blood and about 1.5 times the enzyme activity.

How do athletes raise muscle carnosine by mouth?

With beta-alanine, slowly. Your muscles build carnosine from beta-alanine and histidine, and beta-alanine is the limiting ingredient, so athletes take it daily until muscle carnosine climbs. The International Society of Sports Nutrition puts the dose at 4–6 g a day, with four weeks of that significantly raising muscle carnosine.

  • Performance effects show up after at least 2–4 weeks of daily dosing, and are clearest in all-out efforts lasting 1–4 minutes.
  • The one reported side effect is paraesthesia — the pins and needles beta-alanine is known for — reduced by splitting the dose into 1.6 g servings or using a slow-release form.
  • It only works if you keep taking it. Miss the loading block and there is nothing to call on for this weekend’s event.

Beta-alanine works, but it is a month-long project. Carnosine gel vs beta-alanine sets the two routes side by side.

Why not just take a bigger dose of carnosine by mouth?

Because the enzyme is the bottleneck, not the dose. The Everaert study already used a large dose — 60 mg per kilogram, a single serving of more than 4 g for most adults — and two in three people still showed no measurable carnosine in their blood. Swallow more and most of it is still split into beta-alanine and histidine before it gets anywhere near a muscle.

  • Carnosinase activity differs between people, and you cannot tell from the outside whether you are a high or low one.
  • What does survive the blood still has to be taken up by muscle, and the Everaert study measured blood and urine, not muscle.
  • The two routes that reliably change muscle carnosine avoid the problem: beta-alanine, by letting the muscle build carnosine itself over weeks, and the skin, by going straight to the muscle underneath.

Can carnosine get through the skin into muscle?

Yes — Dieter et al. 2021 measured it. Ten racehorses had carnosine applied to the skin, and a placebo on a separate occasion, then muscle samples were taken. Muscle carnosine was about 35% higher than placebo at 30 minutes and about 46% higher at 60 minutes. By 120 minutes there was no difference.

  • It was a crossover: every horse had both carnosine and placebo, so each animal was its own comparison.
  • It measured muscle, not blood — the tissue that actually needs the buffer.
  • It gives the timing. The rise was clear by 30 minutes and larger at 60, which is why the human protocol applies the gel about 45 minutes before the hard work.

Does topical carnosine improve performance?

In the strongest trial, yes. Beaven et al. 2025 gave seven world-class rugby sevens players LactiGo and, on another day, a placebo gel with the same 1.25% menthol. Across twelve maximal sprints, peak power was 5–10% higher on LactiGo in the authors’ summary — 1426 W vs 1270 W in sprint 7.

Sprint 2: 1433 watts on the gel, 1332 watts on placebo, 101 watts more. Sprint 4: 1347 watts on the gel, 1244 watts on placebo, 103 watts more. Sprint 7: 1426 watts on the gel, 1270 watts on placebo, 156 watts more.Sprint 2+101 WSprint 4+103 WSprint 7+156 W1200 W1300 W1400 W

An earlier field test, Sharpe 2016, had eleven Serie A footballers run three all-out 1000 m trials about 4% faster with LactiGo added. One study in trained cyclists doing repeated Wingate tests saw no change — the gel is built for repeated hard efforts, not steady endurance. The evidence page lists every trial.

Is topical carnosine for sport the same as carnosine skincare?

No. Carnosine creams and serums in skincare are made to act on the skin itself. A sports gel is made to carry carnosine through the skin to the muscle underneath, and LactiGo’s formula includes magnesium sulfate for exactly that job, alongside L-carnosine and, in the standard version, menthol.

That difference is why a face cream with carnosine on the label tells you nothing about performance. The finished product has to be tested, and LactiGo is the one that has been. More on the topical route in general is on our topical carnosine page.

Which carnosine route should you choose?

For a specific session or event, the skin route: it is the only one that works on the day. Beta-alanine fits a long training block; a carnosine capsule is mostly broken down before it gets anywhere.

How to supplement carnosine the topical way

About 10 ml per leg — ten pumps over the quad and calf — on clean, dry skin, 45 minutes before your first hard effort. That is the protocol the 2025 trial used, and it lines up with the absorption window from the horse study. The details are on the protocol page.

LactiGo is Informed Sport tested batch by batch, needs no loading and no pills, and comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee. At the trial dose a bottle is about five sessions — here is what it costs. Put it on before the session you care about and let the numbers answer the question for you.
